little embers

It began with a little ember
I caught off a spark
from the filament of your iris,
that sea, that web,
that portal you called a stargate.

…

From your feet I gathered kindle,
so that ember could have a nest.
I placed it in my left breast pocket,
where it rested, where it rooted,
where it became a phoenix’s egg.

…

And on the day of your goodbye,
I reached for that weight in my pocket,
I laid it at the place you once stood,
at the point of our collision, at the point of our cohesion,
I followed your instructions and formed a pyre.

…

With your light that never left me,
I lit the first, the best, gift you ever gave to me,
and remembering your present with reverent eyes,
I saw a flame rise. I saw a phoenix stoked.
I saw little embers break for the stars.

Graveyard Hopping on 6th Street

I heard stories of a place
Where one could meet fellow lonely ghosts…
Where spirits drowned in spirits and
Every ghost shared what made them go Boo…

All of these lonely ghosts…
So many sad ghosts…
All of them lingering ghosts…

Each one haunting a familiar sight…
Each one moaning a tragic plight…

Ah – this gathering of ghosts,
They’ve delayed the haunting of their gravesite,
To haunt a different kind of graveyard,
           …a different kind of loss…
Instead of lamenting over headstone inscriptions,
They’ll lament over half-empty glasses,
And the finality of the bartender’s last call…

Oh – these sad, lonely ghosts,
All they ever wanted was another ghost to haunt with…
Someone they can share with a séance…
Someone they can share with the scare of Death…

Really, what ghost could say no?

dealing with the reaper

dealing with the reaper

Reaper, you came without warning.
one minute we were a happy, intact, family,
the next we are fearful of your knocking.
(…because you’re everything we wished to avoid,
knock, knock, knocking at our door…)

Reaper, why won’t you ever go away,
is it because you are jealous
that life is so warm, and death is so cold,
(…or are you just doing your duty
because our life is so temporary, and your side is so forever?)

Reaper, where are you headed
with our loved ones in your carriage,
where are you steering your Nightmare steeds
so that we can never see the again?
(…and how come you are the only one,
who ever makes it back across the eternal fold?)

About…

Trevor/Forever

Were you sacrificed
To make us listen?
Are we destined to die
Before we are destined to be?

The echo of your death
Resonates strong today,
Opening the gates
To a flood of tears.[…]

Were you sacrificed
To make us listen?
Are we destined to die
Before we are destined to be?

The echo of your death
Resonates strong today,
Opening the gates
To a flood of tears.

I remember your beauty,
Your guiding light,
Your radiating humor,
And sadness chokes my words.

Two years back and still I cry,
For your impact went deep,
And your memory even deeper.

I hate thinking in past tense,
Remembering you as you were
And not as you are.

I feel your death was unfair
On an infinite level of planes.
A treasure was stolen from us,
A person greater than life.

I love you so much
That I’ll never let go.
I miss you so greatly
That I’ll keep that candle lit.
