The Merit of Remembrance (An Eulogy for Mr. “Johnny” Lanier) Dearest love, I’m sorry to say goodbye In such a way that has your heart in tatters, If there was anyway I could ease your tears, I’d ask that you love my memory strongest. There’s no eternal space, there’s no infinite span, That my spirit cannot cross when divined by memory, There’s no forever ever, there’s no never then, That can dim this Light that I’ve passed on. Sweetest love, this might have been goodbye, But I promise I haven’t truly gone anywhere, Because the moment everyone said I departed, Became the moment I forever remained at home. Finally, I will say there’s no saying farewell When remembrance resurrects who I am and what I meant, And when you recall that twinkle in my eye, You share it with the world to cherish and celebrate. 2/16/09 M.
